About

Elayce first directed Jude Christian’s NANJING as a live theatre production in the UK, at venues including Shakespeare’s Globe. It is an autobiographical solo performance that questions the nature of pacifism through exploring the little known history of the Nanjing Massacre that took place in World War II, Jude’s personal family history and contemporary global politics.

In 2020, NANJING was one of 10 pieces selected for presentation at the Theatertreffen Stückemarkt in Berlin - the ‘festival within a festival’ that celebrates new writers from across the globe. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 festival was delayed until 2021, when it eventually became an online festival.

NANJING has always been a live theatre piece because it exists to make space for dialogue: after the show, audiences are invited to stay and talk - to us and to each other. For the online festival, NANJING was filmed without an audience and presented in the Stückemarkt’s online portal, where audiences could explore the virtual festival grounds, engage in discussion and interact with other audience members as they watched different productions. NANJING was filmed at The Yard in London, which is where the piece had first been presented as a work-in-progress in 2016.
