About
Performed in the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre in London as part of HUMANS, a double bill of world premieres from London Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future scheme, JUST FOR TODAY is a new composition by Pablo Martinez, with dramaturgy and stage direction from Elayce.
This theatrical composition is inspired by the life story of Pablo’s mother and narrates her experience of homelessness and drug addiction alongside painting a portrait of the changing city of São Paulo in Brazil, and specifically the creation of the Sala São Paulo in 1999, a modern concert hall located in an area of the city known as ‘cracolândia’ (‘crackland’). JUST FOR TODAY combines spoken and sung text with audio recordings and video to create an intimate and emotionally resonant portrait of a life lived in tension with a society that welcomes some and rejects others.
